Step one:
buy a pack of these wooden Q tip cleaning tools for airbrushes. I bought mine for around 10$ I believe but you get a bunch of them!

Step two:
Cut the ends off on both sides (I like to cut them kinda messy and from an angle to look like they were a real tree that was cut)

Step three:
I like to cut small rivets into the wood stocks about a 3rd way through going around the the piece of wood to look like limbs that have been cut off.

Step four:
I like to paint these in a color that resembles a more red colored wood because I think that adds more pop to the model. I recommend following these colors as a base.

It doesn’t have to be exact at all! There’s not really a way to go wrong just whatever color you think is good it will probably look better dulled a bit if the color is too bright.
(Also thin the paint a bit with some water because the wood soaked in most of my paint quickly)

Step five:
After you’re finished painting I like to have them in stacks of 3 on top of each other. What I do is I glue them with some superglue around the ends and then after that dries I put some hobby tape wrapping around the wood like a rope or whatever.

I have multi size modelers tape but if you’re tape is too big you can cut it to size with a hobby knife

After the tape is on I also glue that to the other end to keep it from coming off over time
